Become a volunteer!

Get involved and make a difference at the 52nd annual Hospital Hill Run! Support runners when they need it most and be part of this iconic Kansas City tradition that promotes health, fitness, and community spirit. Whether you're cheering on participants at an aid station, assisting runners at the finish line, or directing traffic as a course monitor, your time and effort will be truly appreciated. Join us in making this year's run an unforgettable day while connecting with fellow volunteers and celebrating the heart of Kansas City!

VOLUNTEER ROLES

Aid Station: Get in the action and provide a boost! Aid stations are a perfect way for volunteer groups, grant groups and corporate volunteer teams to get involved and volunteer together. This essential role provides hydration, energy, and moral support to race participants. As runners advance through the race, you'll be on the course to provide a boost with water/Powerade, your smiling face and positive cheers. Aid stations operate in teams of 15-20 and all supplies are provided. Fun is encouraged! Show off your group pride with a theme, music, signs, costumes, noisemakers, etc. Make it yours and have a good time!

Aid station teams are filling fast! To sign up and choose your location, please email Jason Brown.

Duties include:

  • Setting up the station

  • Filling and stacking cups with water and Powerade

  • Handing beverages to athletes

  • Cheering on the runners

  • Cleaning up the area

Course Monitor: Protect runners and keep them on track. Serve a vital role in keeping the athletes safe by ensuring the streets that make up the course are clear of vehicles and spectators. You’re also there to make sure runners stay on course and keep going in the right direction.

Start/Finish Line Support: Help ensure the race starts flawlessly by assisting runners in the starting area. Then, as athletes cross the finish line, greet them with complimentary food and water and present them with the finisher’s medals they’ve worked so hard to earn.  The celebration and road to recovery starts with you!

BBQ Tent Server: Every race participant receives a complimentary breakfast burrito from Burnt End BBQ.  Assist in the food tent and ensure there’s not a along wait for hungry runners after their race!

Gear Check: Help participants keep their personal belongings safe on race day.  Greet athletes on race day morning and check in their gear for safe keeping during the race.  Following the race, retrieve participants’ gear as they depart the event.

Packet Pickup: You will be the first stop for every Hospital Hill Run athlete as they prepare for the race. You will welcome participants as they arrive for Packet Pickup, look up their registration, assign bib numbers, and hand out race packets including race bibs and participant t-shirts.

Floater: Surprises happen and things come up that create last-minute needs on race day.   You will be there to save the day and fill whatever volunteer needs arise. Flexibility and patience are needed as you will receive your assignment upon arrival Saturday morning.

Registration Guidelines

  • All volunteers must register individually and sign a waiver, even if volunteering as part of a group.

  • A parent or guardian may register someone under the age of 18. Volunteers under 16 require supervision during their shift, 1 adult per 5 children.

  • You may register for multiple shifts as long as the shifts do not overlap.

  • Hospital Hill Run takes place RAIN or SHINE. The athletes and fans count on the volunteers to show up on time and complete their commitments in order to have a safe and good experience.

  • After completing online registration, volunteers will receive an automatic confirmation and detailed information closer to race day. We will text emergency notifications during race weekend if necessary.

Questions are always welcome at info@sportkc.org. Thank you for making the Hospital Hill Run possible and continuing “The Kansas City Running Tradition!”
