Manager, Public Relations & Communications
As two non-profit organizations founded in 1966 and 1989, our staff works to fulfill a mission to enhance the quality of life and economic success of Greater Kansas City by taking the lead in maintaining and selectively acquiring a diversity of amateur and professional sporting events; to collaborate with area economic development and agencies to attract and retain amateur and professional sports organizations; and to promote the lifetime benefits of sports for the citizens of Greater Kansas City.
Whether we are hosting NCAA or Big 12 championships, producing local endurance events such as the Garmin Kansas City Marathon, executing WIN for KC events, planning victory parades, or managing activation around major events such as the 2023 NFL Draft and select activities of KC2026 – we strive to make Kansas City better through sports.
Overview
We are looking to hire a Manager, Public Relations & Communications, to support all marketing, communications and public relations for the organization. This position serves as the liaison between the Kansas City Sports Commission/WIN for KC, the media and the general public.
Job duties
Write and distribute KC Sports Commission and WIN for KC press releases, including uploading press releases to the Sports Commission website.
Coordinate/organize press conferences and/or other media events.
Develop and maintain a current listing of media and PR contacts (local, regional and national)
Cultivate relationships with key media contacts and pitch relevant stories to support events and programming and generate positive PR for the organization
Promote and manage Kansas City Sports Awards and WIN for KC Women’s Sports Awards nomination process. Also, help with crafting scripts for those events.
Manage and write any other run of show scripts for events as needed
Manage list/database of local and national award opportunities (individual and organizational) for consideration
Write & distribute emails to Sports Commission/WIN for KC/event databases (including, but not limited to Garmin Kansas City Marathon monthly email, WIN for KC monthly email, etc.)
Develop bid materials, in conjunction with the Director of National Events and outside entities, in efforts to secure future sporting events in Kansas City
Serve as the Sports Commission’s media representative when needed.
Attend industry related conferences/seminars as warranted
Maintain brand standards, including key messages, brand pillars and mission statements, in public relations & communications
Work with other local entities (Visit KC, event venues, professional teams, etc.) for marketing city-wide events (NCAA events, Big 12 events+)
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Four-year degree preferred in communications or a related field
Minimum of three years’ experience within a public relations and communications environment
Excellent written and verbal communications skills
Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal and problem-solving skills
Knowledge of the Greater Kansas City community and sports scene
Must be a team player willing to work occasional evenings and weekends at events with willingness to jump in and be hands on to meet tight deadlines
Must be a detail-oriented, strategic, self-starter
Ability to work across departments and manage competing deadlines and priorities
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Word and PowerPoint)
