Big 12 Women’s Basketball Honorary Coaches Program Selected as Winner of Forvis BE BOLD Award at the 2024 Women’s Sports Awards

KANSAS CITY, MO (January 16, 2024) – This year’s Forvis BE BOLD Award goes to the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Honorary Coaches Program. Representatives of the program will accept the award at the 2024 Women’s Sports Awards presented by Burns & McDonnell. The annual awards program is WIN for KC’s biggest fundraiser and the largest luncheon in the country celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

In 2001, a small group of women came together to create the Honorary Coaches program for the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Tournament. This group bonded with visiting Big 12 women’s basketball programs and went out of its way to make those teams feel special and loved by the Kansas City community. During a period of 12 years, this group also raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for WIN for KC.

These women worked to champion women’s basketball in the city of Kansas City as well as provide significant financial support to WIN for KC during the early years of the organization. The group was a collection of determined women who supported WIN for KC from its inception in 1994 and paved the way for decades of possibilities for the organization.

“On behalf of WIN for KC and the thousands of people impacted by our mission, I want to thank all the incredible women who participated in our Honorary Coaches program,” says Kathy Nelson, President and CEO of the Kansas City Sports Commission and WIN for KC. “Many of them, including Karen Daniel, Jan Kreamer, Kathleen Kunkler and Patti Phillips, continue to lead the charge for equity, access and community buy-in for women’s sports.”

The 2024 WIN for KC Women’s Sports Awards, which takes place in the historic Municipal Auditorium, kicks off by honoring local 2023 female high school state champions with their celebratory march across the stage. Then, throughout the luncheon, event attendees learn about the six honorees in the following categories: Children’s Mercy Kansas City Rising Star Award, Lockton Courage Award, Kissick Construction Game Changer Award, UMBFC Charitable Foundation Lifetime Sportswoman Award, Hallmark Cards Leadership Award and Forvis BE BOLD Award. Finally, the keynote speaker delivers an electrifying speech reflective of her challenges and triumphs in the world of sports.

The 2024 Women’s Sports Awards presented by Burns & McDonnell will be on Tuesday, January 30th. For more information, please click here.
