Kansas City Sports Commission Receives Prestigious Awards at the Annual SportsETA Symposium
KANSAS CITY, MO (April 23, 2024) – On Tuesday, the Sports Events & Tourism Association, the non-profit trade association for the sports events and tourism industry, honored the Kansas City Sports Commission with the following awards: Event or Program Impact of the Year for its work on the 2023 NFL Draft and Executive of the Year for Kathy Nelson, President and CEO of the Kansas City Sports Commission and WIN for KC.
“Throughout my career, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of sports to build community, create economic opportunity and bring awareness to Kansas City,” said Nelson. “To receive these awards in front of my peers is a humbling and special moment.”
In 2023, Kansas City took its place in the national spotlight as the NFL Draft transformed Union Station and the National WWI Museum and Memorial into a celebration of football. And while the event delivered billions of impressions from social media and news coverage, its impact went much further than publicity. From the local food vendors who made over $1.12 million onsite to the hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of materials donated to more than two dozen local nonprofits – including more than 68,000 pounds of beverages, packaged snacks, meals and assorted foods to Pete’s Garden and Harvester’s Food Bank – the NFL Draft had (and continues to have) a profound effect on Kansas City.
“I’m incredibly blessed to work with a team of professionals who routinely give it their all,” continued Nelson. “And with a busy calendar each year, it can be difficult to stop and appreciate what we’ve accomplished. This award, acknowledging the NFL Draft’s impact on Kansas City, is an important reminder of why we do this work on behalf of our city and region.”
