Kansas City Girl-Serving Organizations Assisted by WIN for KC:

girls on the run

There’s a fun new way for girls to boost their self-esteem, develop friendships and participate in a lifelong sport.  It’s called Girls on the Run® — a national organization that recently started forming groups in Johnson and Jackson Counties.  This coach-led program combines training for a 5k race/walk with life lessons in self-respect and healthy living.  Girls on the Run groups meet twice a week for 12 weeks to run, laugh, learn and look at the “girl box” issues they face every day.  At the end of their season, the girls will get to run, walk or skip to the finish line of a 5k race together.  The program serves girls age 8-12.

Girls on the Run is thrilled to be a program partner with WIN for KC.  As we expand our program to reach more girls across Kansas City, we are in need of active volunteers, coaches and board members as well as contacts and suggestions for new site locations.  For information on registration, sites or volunteer opportunities, visit the Kansas City Girls on the Run website.

young women on the move

Young Women on the Move is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2005 to empower middle school and high school girls to live healthy lives filled with positive options. Our goal is to help girls discover their personal power and develop skills and behaviors that lead to healthier lifestyle choices that will help them navigate the challenging adolescent years and become healthy and emotionally resilient adults.

Mary Beth Gentry founded Young Women on the Move on the belief that young women in the urban core when given the tools and resources to expand their vision, could indeed achieve their potential in life and become the vital agents of change within their families and communities. This program is currently in four Kansas City, Kansas USD 500 schools -- Argentine Middle, Central Middle, Harmon High and Wyandotte High Schools. Collaborators include YouthFriends, the University of Kansas College of Education, KU School of Nursing’s KU Health Partners, UMKC’s School of Social Work, and the KU Community Health and Development program in the Department of Applied Behavioral Sciences.  Visit the Young Women on the Move website to learn more.
